Lore & Background

Wanderstop was conceptualized beginning in 2016 after Davey Wreden daydreamed of a tea shop in the woods, and bona fide development started around 2018. The project took over nine years to complete, using Unreal Engine and Blueprints visual scripting for no-code development. Originally intended as a purely cozy game, the focus shifted to trauma when editor Karla Zimonja joined development, and Wreden integrated his own burnout from developing The Stanley Parable and The Beginner's Guide into the narrative. The art design drew inspiration from other cozy games, Impressionist art, and Art Nouveau, while C418's original score plays dynamically based on player actions.

Reader's Guide

Wanderstop was released on March 11, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S. Critics praised its characters, art and world design, narrative, and music, while the gameplay received a more divisive response. It appeared on several year-end best lists for 2025 and received nominations at the Golden Joystick Awards and the Game Awards 2025. After release, Wreden expressed uncertainty about his future in game development, while C418 was open to further work with Ivy Road on a new game. The studio had plans for a game titled Engine Angel, but Ivy Road announced it would shut down on March 31, 2026 due to a lack of funding. The game's significance lies in its deliberate subversion of cozy game conventions to address serious themes of trauma and burnout, and its use of no-code development tools to empower non-programmer team members.
